FNU Presents 2026 Distinguished Preceptor Award to Kathleen Isaac

Kathleen Isaac, APRN, CNM, knew at an early age that she wanted to be a nurse. She was born in Washington, D.C. and spent her early years in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, before moving to Floyd County, Kentucky, by the time she was in her teens. By the time she graduated from Wheelwright High School, she already knew what she wanted to do.

“In the 70s, women were teachers or nurses. I went with nursing, then decided to share what I continue to learn.”

Her learning began at Alice Lloyd College, followed by Prestonsburg Community College, the Frontier School of Nursing and Midwifery (1980), and the University of Kentucky. She graduated with dual certification as a family nurse practitioner (FNP) and certified nurse-midwife (CNM). After 10 years, she dropped the FNP and centered on women’s health care and nurse-midwifery.

“I was told once that I was the youngest graduate from Frontier,” she said, noting that she was 21 when she graduated. “I have worked as a FNP or CNM since — sometimes both. I worked at a birthing center in Knott County, and also worked for East Kentucky Health Services, the emergency room at McDowell Hospital, and Our Lady of the Way Hospital in Martin, Kentucky. The nurses at McDowell Hospital talked me into advancing to be a nurse practitioner. They were right. I love it, and love making a difference.”

Isaac also worked with the Kentucky River District Health Department to establish obstetric and family planning programs for eight counties. She went on to work at Women’s Care of Eastern Kentucky and Women’s Care of the Bluegrass for 27 years. Today, she works at the University of Kentucky HealthCare, where she has been for the past four years.

Now, Isaac is part of a University of Kentucky midwifery practice in Lexington, where she provides childbirth assistance and treats mothers and infants before, during, and after pregnancy. She estimates that she has delivered more than 4,000 babies during her career.

“I have also worked at FNU three times over the years as a part-time educator,” Isaac said.” I have very much enjoyed my career.”

In addition to the service she provides to her patients, Isaac also has a long history of serving as a preceptor for midwifery students, many of whom come from Frontier. She has precepted over 50 Frontier students from the CNEP, WHNP, and FNP programs at sites including the UK Midwife Clinic, the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital, Women’s Care of the Bluegrass, and the Frankfort Regional Medical Center. Isaac was the American College of Nurse-Midwives’ Outstanding Preceptor Award recipient in 2011.

“Frontier’s motto was ‘see one, do one, teach one!’ I guess I’ve just always thought was part of the job. I have precepted many students over the years. You always need to pay it forward,” Isaac said. “Students keep you sharp. You think of new ways to teach. The challenge comes from understanding each person’s learning style. You need to figure out what works for them.”
