Sherret Register: Sharing the Power of Scholarships

A longstanding phrase associated with Frontier Nursing University is “answering the call”. That call is persistent. The call to serve becomes a passion, fueled by determination and fine-tuned by education and training. But it’s not without its hurdles and challenges. Sometimes, those hurdles are cleared only with the help of others.

For Frontier student Sherret Register, CNEP (Class 212), CBD, MSN, RN, the journey began with the encouragement of a friend.

“I wanted to be a nurse for years but didn’t want to go back to school,” said Register, who was born in Water Valley, Mississippi. “When I moved to Dothan (Alabama), one of my co-workers was pursuing his nursing degree and persuaded me to jump on board.”

As a nurse, she found herself on the right path, but not yet exactly where she wanted to be. She was drawn to nurse-midwifery after “working in Labor and Delivery and not agreeing with the processes and unnecessary interventions.”

Seeking a restart, she was reminded of what drew her to a career in healthcare in the first place: “The passion of doing what I love. If I want to switch specialties or love something new, I can.”

Finding nurse-midwifery as her calling, Register enrolled at Frontier based on its history and reputation as a leader in nurse-midwifery education.

“My dream is to be an expert in women’s health and to open a birth center and to have a mobile unit,” Register said.

Though her dream is very much still intact, it is not a journey free of hurdles.

“I’ve had to overcome missing time with my family,” Register acknowledged. “I went through a divorce during this journey. It’s been a financial burden.”

Register also travels over three hours for her clinicals, which adds further strain to her finances. In need of help, she applied “for all scholarships that I was eligible for.”

One such scholarship offered by Frontier is the JEND Scholarship. The scholarship was established to honor Janet and Edward Pape, and Norbert & Dorothy Pilarowski (JEND). Jenny and John Pilarowski established this scholarship honor their parents and to help encourage the next generation of nurse-midwives in their quest to learn and provide excellent family-centered care.

“It helped a lot, especially with gas costs,” Register said.

She lists her girls, her friends, her mom, and Frontier as her biggest supporters on her path to becoming a nurse-midwife.

“My degree from Frontier will open doors to getting my WHNP certification and my DNP,” Register said.

Generous support from donors helps make it possible for students like Sherret Register to pursue their calling as nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners – careers that transform lives and strengthen communities. Every gift opens the door for dedicated students to advance their education and expand access to compassionate, high-quality care.
