
Kerri D. Schuiling, PhD, CNM (ret), NP-BC (emeritus), FACNM, FAAN
Dr. Schuiling holds a BSN from Northern Michigan University, an MSN from Wayne State University, and a PhD from the University of Michigan. She earned her nurse-midwifery certification from Frontier University in 1991 (a member of the first CNEP graduating class). She has held a variety of practice and academic positions and was until recently certified as both a women’s health nurse practitioner and nurse-midwife. She was the third nurse practitioner to practice in western MI and was the first credentialed nurse-midwife at Spectrum Health (now known as Corewell Health) in Grand Rapids, MI. She served as Northern Michigan University’s provost and vice president for academic affairs for 8 years before taking on the role of President of the University; a position from which she semi-retired from in 2024.
Dr. Schuiling was inducted as a fellow in the American College of Nurse-Midwives in 2003 and inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2011 which is one of nursing’s most prestigious honors. She has received several awards including recognition as one of the 2013 Esteemed Women of Michigan by the Burnstein Community Health Clinic for her dedication and action to support women’s health. She was previously honored by NMU with a Distinguished Faculty Award and was one of the inaugural recipients of NMU’s Excellence in Professional Development Award. She is a recipient of the Kitty Ernst Award (2001) from the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) and the Dorthea M. Lang Pioneer Award (2024) from the ACNM Foundation. In 2015 she received Frontier’s inaugural Distinguished Service to Society Award and in 2025 was one of the 5 inaugural inductees into Frontier Nursing University’s Hall of Fame.
In addition to presenting more than 70 times at various professional venues, she has published more than 50 peer reviewed articles and book chapters, and is the founding co-editor of the book: Gynecologic Health Care, which has received two Book of the Year Awards from ACNM and was recognized as an American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year. Dr. Schuiling served on the editorial board of Journal of Nursing Research, the Journal Women’s Healthcare: A Clinical Journal for NPs, the African Journal of Reproductive Health and is the founding co-editor of the International Journal of Childbirth, which is the official journal of the International Confederation of Midwives. Dr. Schuiling also served as chair for the Research Standing Committee of the International Confederation of Midwives for more than 9 years.
Dr. Schuiling currently serves as the Vice Chair of Frontier Nursing University’s Board of Directors.
