Dr. Joan Slager is an Associate Professor and Dean of Nursing at Frontier Nursing University. She is a Certified Nurse-Midwife and is the Immediate Past Treasurer of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, a recipient of the Dorothea Lang Pioneer Award, and Frontier Nursing University’s Distinguished Service to Alma Mater Award. Dr. Slager is a Fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and the American Academy of Nursing.
Dr. Slager practiced full-scope midwifery and helped to establish Bronson Women’s Service in Kalamazoo, Michigan where she served as the practice director for 21 years. She is recognized as a national expert in Billing and Coding for advanced nurse practice providers representing the American Nurses Association and the American College of Nurse-Midwives on the American Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology Update and Relative Value Update Committees. Through her invited lectures, webinars, consultations, and publications, she has worked to assist providers across the country with improving practice management and billing practices. She served as Chair of the Business Section of the Division of Standards and Practice for the American College of Nurse-Midwives, Division Chair and 2 terms as the Treasurer on the Board of Directors allowing her to impact policy development and advocacy to promote equitable reimbursement for Advanced Practice Nurse services.
Dr. Slager graduated from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in 1991 and completed her Master of Science in Nursing at Case Western University in 1993. She graduated from Oakland University in Rochester, MI, with a Doctor in Nursing Practice degree in 2008.
