Dr. Michael Carter’s long history with Frontier Nursing University dates to 2003 when he joined what was then the Frontier Nursing Service Board of Governors. Dr. Carter has been a board member ever since and has served as the Board Chair since 2009.
A Century of Stories: Dr. Maria Valentin-Welch, DNP, MPH, CNM, FACNM
Among the major milestones moments in Frontier Nursing University’s emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion came on October 1, 2017, when Dr. Maria Valentin-Welch was named the university’s first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO). Prior to her appointment, Dr. Valentin-Welch had served as a course coordinator at Frontier since 2013 and as the co-chair of FNU’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

When the COVID-19 pandemic spread to the United States in early 2020, the public responses ranged from panic to denial. As businesses and services were restricted or completely shut down across the country, FNU alumni stepped forward. True to the Frontier mission, they were determined, creative, and brave in their efforts to serve their communities.
A Century of Stories: Ruth Beeman, MPH
Ruth Beeman was born on January 10, 1925, in Harriston, Virginia. After graduating from high school, she entered the Army Nursing Corps in 1943, beginning a lifelong career in nursing. After her stint in the Army, she received a Diploma in Nursing from Baltimore General Hospital (1946), a Nurse Midwife Certificate from the Maternity Center Association School of Nurse-Midwifery in New York (1950), a B.S. in Public Health Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania (1950), a Diploma in Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium (1953) and a MPH from Columbia University (1957). Ruth’s career as a nurse-midwife and educator spanned six decades and multiple countries. Ruth served as Dean of the FSMFN from 1983-1989. After her stint as Dean, she became the first person to be named to the Chair of Midwifery position at Frontier.

FNU President Dr. Susan Stone to Transition to Distinguished Chair of Midwifery and Nursing
Frontier Nursing University (FNU) announced that university President Dr. Susan Stone, DNSc, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, will transition into a new role as the university’s appointed Distinguished Chair of Midwifery. Dr. Stone’s transition into this role will tentatively occur at the end of 2023, pending the identification of her successor. Dr. Stone has served as the president of FNU since 2001.
